LeopardEye<\/strong> UPDATE 5 September 2026 – A message from Jack Kinross<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days ago as I write this, a terrible tragedy struck Nepal, currently my main base. Thousands of people have been killed in an event which has rocked the nation, a deadly flood occurring after a massive landslide in the Langtang Himalaya on the Nepal–Tibet border. Due to the scale and seriousness of this event, we are stepping up efforts in the development and deployment of LeopardEye so that early warning and monitoring systems can be in place to help avoid incidents of such massive loss of life as has just occurred. Landscape monitoring to mitigate human-wildlife conflict and wildlife crime has long been the focal point of LeopardEye so it is logical that we increase resources so as to combine human safety improvements in a holistic approach in fragile habitats, especially the Himalaya. LeopardEye is evolving from a wildlife monitoring and early-warning system into a resilient, multi-layer landscape intelligence platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its original purpose was to use technology to protect wildlife, reduce human\u2013wildlife conflict and support people working in difficult conservation environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That remains at its core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the same principle applies far beyond wildlife:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we can detect change early enough, we may be able to prevent a crisis rather than simply respond to it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the direction of LeopardEye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prevention, Not Reaction<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Too often, environmental and wildlife management is reactive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poaching occurs \u2014 we discover the evidence afterwards (please go to #AntiSnare<\/a> where LeopardEye is a key tool). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A flood occurs \u2014 we respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A landslide happens \u2014 we investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A glacier or unstable slope fails \u2014 we assess the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A leopard enters a settlement \u2014 we begin dealing with the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A communications network fails \u2014 we discover that the monitoring system depended upon it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LeopardEye is being developed around a different principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monitor continuously. Detect change early. Assess developing risk. Communicate information while there is still time to act.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Technology cannot prevent every natural disaster, wildlife encounter or environmental change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But better information, available earlier, can create something extremely valuable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in many emergencies, time is the difference between prevention and response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Early Warning to Early Action<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The catastrophic Himalayan disaster of August 2026 demonstrated the importance of this principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satellite observation subsequently helped reveal the scale and consequences of the event. More importantly, questions arose about whether changes occurring in the landscape before the collapse might have provided indicators of increasing instability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That raises the fundamental question now driving LeopardEye:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if satellite observation, ground monitoring and intelligent analysis could be combined to identify developing risks before they become disasters?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That is the challenge LeopardEye is being designed to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The objective is not simply to produce more warnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is to provide better evidence, earlier<\/strong>, so that scientists, conservation professionals, emergency services, communities and government authorities can make better decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satellite Earth observation can provide wide-area monitoring of places that are too large, remote or inaccessible for continuous ground observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It is to identify potentially significant events and communicate the information that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Resilient Communications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      4G remains valuable where it is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But remote landscapes cannot always depend upon terrestrial networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      LeopardEye is therefore being developed to incorporate satellite communications where required, with local storage providing another layer of resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      4G where available. Satellite where necessary. Local storage when neither is available.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A communications failure should not automatically become a monitoring failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Critical Difference: Change<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

      One of the most important principles behind LeopardEye is change detection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Traditional monitoring often asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The same principle applies to wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A LeopardEye station can establish a baseline of normal conditions and identify significant departures from that baseline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The developing intelligence cycle is therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      BASELINE \u2192 OBSERVATION \u2192 CHANGE \u2192 CORROBORATION \u2192 ASSESSMENT \u2192 ALERT \u2192 ACTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Not every change represents danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Not every alert requires intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Artificial intelligence should not create false certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Instead, LeopardEye is intended to provide increasingly sophisticated evidence and indicators<\/strong> that allow qualified people to determine what requires action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Monitor the Source \u2014 Not Just the Consequence<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

      Prevention also requires looking beyond the place where the consequences eventually appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      An environmental emergency may begin high in the mountains while its effects occur many kilometres downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A useful monitoring architecture therefore considers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Understanding the entire system creates a much greater opportunity for prevention than monitoring only the final point of impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Although LeopardEye began with wildlife protection, its underlying architecture is deliberately modular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Indeed, the connection is stronger than it may first appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            A system capable of identifying developing environmental change can also identify disturbance in wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            A communications system capable of operating beyond reliable 4G can support conservation work in remote areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            An early-warning system capable of detecting approaching wildlife can help prevent human\u2013wildlife conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And reducing conflict can reduce the conditions that contribute to retaliatory killing, snaring and ultimately wildlife trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            This is why LeopardEye is increasingly viewed not simply as a wildlife camera system, but as a prevention and intelligence capability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Why This Matters in the Himalaya<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

            Nepal illustrates the challenge particularly clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Large areas of the country are mountainous, remote and difficult to access. Communications infrastructure can be uneven. Weather and terrain can change rapidly. Roads and other infrastructure can be damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            At the same time, these landscapes contain globally important wildlife habitats, fragile mountain ecosystems, major river systems, glacial environments and communities living directly within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Conventional monitoring alone cannot provide continuous visibility across such enormous and difficult terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            LeopardEye’s ambition is to combine multiple forms of observation so that important changes do not have to wait until somebody physically reaches the location to be discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            LeopardEye is not intended to replace scientists, conservation professionals, emergency responders or government authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Its role is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Observe more. Detect earlier. Understand better. Communicate reliably.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Then allow the people responsible for decisions to act with better information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Artificial intelligence can help identify patterns and changes across enormous quantities of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Satellites can provide the wide view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Ground systems can provide the close view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Sensors can provide measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Communications can keep information moving when conventional infrastructure is unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            But ultimately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            People make the decisions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            LeopardEye exists to give them a better chance to make those decisions before it is too late.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
